Milking Area

Pasture utilisation should be calculated on the area of the farm that the cows are milked on, known as the Milking Area. You must keep this in mind when entering your farms data. The milking area is the area in hectares that cows graze to produce milk. Do not include separate areas that replacement stock may graze or the area of run off blocks.

Irrigation water used

To estimate the amount of pasture grown on the irrigated area, you need to
provide the amount of irrigation water that has been used for the season
up to this date.
If you are unsure, try to estimate the amount used.

Average production of milkfat per cow

Average milk production per season (kgMF/cow)
Select the average kg of fat produced by your cows per season.

Feed consumed by milking & dry cows

Record total kilograms of milkfat produced to date, including
the milk fed to calves.

Pasture consumed by dry cows away from milking area

Record the number of dry cows away and the number of days they were away to
calculate pasture consumed by dry cows while they are away from the milking area.

Pasture consumed by young stock, bulls or other stock on the milking area

Record the number of rising 1 year olds, rising 2 year olds, bulls and
other stock grazing on the milking area and the days they were on the
milking area.

Brought in feed

Brought in feed refers to any feed that you have brought in from outside
the milking area and fed to the stock during the period you are referring to.
This will include:
- feed that you have purchased
- feed you may have brought in from the run off block or
- any home grown feed conserved that has been carried over from the previous season
Enter all the feed as wet tonnes fed.

Feed & Fodder

Information on estimating hay and silage amounts.

Hay (is 80% dry matter)

Large round bale (5x4)As fed300-375 kg wet
(equivalent to 15 small square bales)
Large square baleAs fed500 kg wet
(equivalent to 20 small square bales)

Silage

Baled (is 45% dry matter)
Large round bales (5x4)As fed500 - 700 kg wet
Pit (is 30% dry matter)1 tonne wet = 300 kg dry

If you have fed a feed that is not listed, record the type of feed, the amount you have feed in wet tonnes and the % of dry matter in the feed.

Fodder conserved but not used

Only complete this section if you are calculating pasture utilisation for the full year.
This includes any feed that has been conserved on your farm over the year and hasn't been fed back to any of the stock in the milking area during that time. This includes conserved feed that has been fed off the milking area.
